Miley Cyrus just opened up about when she knew her marriage to Liam Hemsworth was over. The musician has been revisiting her life and career, from the earliest days of her childhood to now, in her new TikTok series, named after her latest single “Used to Be Young.” The latest installment of the series focuses on the end of Cyrus and Hemsworth’s years-long relationship.
In the 37th video of the 42-segment series, Cyrus revealed the moment she knew it was time to end their marriage. “I just want to slow down because this is actually serious,” she began, speaking about a June 2019 performance at Glastonbury Festival in the UK. “The day of the [Glastonbury] show was the day I had decided it was no longer going to work in my life to be in that relationship.”
She then spoke briefly about their actual marriage and what it had meant for the then couple. “Me and Liam’s commitment to being married, of course, came from a place of love first because we had been together for 10 years, but also from a place of trauma and just trying to rebuild as quickly as we could,” Cyrus shared. She and Hemsworth had been off and on since 2010 and married in 2018 after their Malibu home was destroyed by fire, which is what she was likely referencing here.
Hemsworth ultimately filed for divorce in August of 2019. Cyrus said the divorce taught her an important lesson about the balance of fame and relationships. “That was another moment where the work, the performance, the character came first,” she said. “I guess that’s why it’s now so important to me for that not to be the case—that the human comes first.”
In 2020, Cyrus spoke openly about the massive media attention on herself and Hemsworth after their split. “What really sucked about it wasn’t the fact that me and someone that I loved realized that we don’t love each other the way that we used to anymore,” she said at the time. “That’s okay; I can accept that. I can’t accept the villainizing and just all those stories…. There was a lot of time between that you didn’t see.”
