Toronto police caught the alleged syringe attacker and have brought him to jail.

Maybe this time a court will see the wisdom to not granting alleged syringe-stabber Aaron Chomenchuck bail.

Lord knows, such wisdom has not been shown in the past.

Toronto Police, who had issued a news release and picture to indicate Chomenchuck was wanted for aggravated assault on an alleged incident in which a woman was stabbed with a used needle, tracked him down in the city Wednesday night and arrested him.

“He was well known,” said an officer.

While police were looking to charge him for the alleged incident at Yonge and Dundas, in which police say a 20-year-old woman was approached from behind and randomly stabbed with a syringe at 3 p.m. Tuesday, they also knew he was on bail for previous charges.

There has been no new information on the condition of the victim in this case. She has been receiving medical treatment.

Police say Chomenchuck fled the scene of the alleged assault and got on the TTC subway. He was on the run for more than a day. Police were looking in parks and shelters throughout the city and at about 8 p.m. Wednesday located him and took him into custody.

Chomenchuck, 43, of no fixed address, was charged with aggravated assault and assault with a weapon but there was a third charge laid by police.

He was charged with failure to comply with a release order.

Justice sources tell the Toronto Sun that this accused was on bail for three alleged assaults, including one on a police officer from October 2023. In the past this accused has been found guilty of attempted robbery – one of his more than 40 convictions he has faced in his adult lifetime.

But it’s his eight convictions with failing to comply to court conditions and six convictions for not attending scheduled court dates that are raising concerns with those trying to keep the city safe.

He is was expected to appear in court Feb. 1. Perhaps this time, bail will be vigorously contested.

And at what point can the words dangerous offender be used to describe someone?
