The death toll in the southern Philippines climbed to eight following a magnitude 6.7 offshore earthquake, as confirmed by the country’s civil defense on Sunday.
Two individuals initially reported missing in a landslide triggered by Friday’s quake off Mindanao island have been declared deceased by the Office of Civil Defense.
The recent fatalities occurred in Sarangani province, adding to those in South Cotabato and Davao Occidental provinces.
Additionally, 13 people sustained injuries in the tremor, causing panic and damaging over 50 houses and structures.
Although electricity has been restored, the aftermath left its mark, with ongoing recovery efforts in affected areas.
Earthquakes are frequent in the Philippines, lying in the Pacific “Ring of Fire”, which the US Geological Survey describes as the “most seismically and volcanically active zone in the world”.
