Only Murders In The Building commits to its big name stars bit with Eugene Levy joining the fourth season | Maqvi News

Only Murders in the Building has always had a good cast, from central trio Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez to the bevy of classic New York actors like Nathan Lane who make up the residents of the Arconia.

Season two kept the story firmly focused on the Arconia and highlighted some of those residents by centering the story on Jayne Houdyshell’s Bunny Folger, but season three went big on stunt casting, with Paul Rudd and Meryl Streep joining the cast for a more outward-facing season. Season four is committing to the bit, bringing in more big names for the latest Arconia murder mystery. (At what point are Oliver, Charles, and Mabel asked to vacate the premises?)

Eugene Levy, a longtime friend of Martin and Short, is joining the fourth season, this on the heels of Eva Longoria’s casting, as well as Meryl Streep returning. Levy got his start on Canada’s legendary SCTV comedy program alongside Martin Short—they’re both even from the same hometown of Hamilton, Ontario—so the two go way back. Levy also appeared in the Father of the Bride movies with Martin and Short.

Part of me enjoys the spot-on character actor casting of Only Murders more than the big stunt casting like Meryl, but I also like that they’re keeping it in the family. Levy is legit friends with Martin and Short, it’s like they’re asking their buddy to hang out and make a thing, which is the sort of collegial attitude everyone likes about Hollywood. (It’s been so fascinating watching the Dune press tour and the emphasis on everyone being friends and how you can tell who actually hung out off-hours and who didn’t. Which isn’t to say they don’t get along! But “work friends” is a real thing, I don’t know why we insist on actors all being super best friends—work friends is good enough.)

In the same vein, Paul Rudd and Selena Gomez formed a friendship after making The Fundamentals of Caring together, and Martin Short and Meryl Streep are friends, too—maybe more???—so while I still kind of think Only Murders doesn’t need the big names, it IS fun that the big names are all connected and this really is a case of friends getting together and making something together. Sometimes the collegial atmosphere really is real, and the Arconia has it!
