Tesla has officially started selling the Powerwall 3 in the U.S. The cost of the home battery storage is $5,880, if you include the 30% Federal tax credit), while installation and fees will be on top of this.
If we take the US price and pass it through a currency converter, we arrive at $8,630.64. To compare it to the current Powerwall 2 sold into Australia, we need to add 10% GST to it, which takes us to A$9,493.70.
This compares to the current Powerwall 2 price of A$10,400, plus an additional A$1,700 for the Gateway, which is built into the Gen3 Powerwall.
This means the comparison is $12,100 compared to A$9,493.70, making Powerwall 3 A$2,606.30 less in Australia, if Tesla were to use a direct exchange rate to price it locally.
Many home owners with solar on their roofs have paid off that investment and are looking at home storage batteries with much interest. The price, combined with lengthy return on investment have meant battery adoption hasn’t exploded in Australia like solar did (now on arond 1/3rd of Australian rooftops.
With a sub-$10k price, it certainly would make the proposition more inviting, although I think many were hoping the price of the Powerwall 3 may even be a little cheaper than this.
In Victoria, we have state incentives, like zero-interest loans of up to $8,800, of which there are 3,022 remaining out of a total 4,500 made available for 2023-2024.
The Powerwall 3 features are:
- Capacity: Stay steady with 13.5kWh of energy storage.
- Power Boost: Crank up the output with 11.5kW continuous on-grid and backup power – a huge 64% jump from Powerwall 2!
- Weather Warrior: Powerwall 3 laughs in the face of floods, resistant to over 2 feet of water.
- Leaner Machine: 16% lighter than Powerwall+ for easier installation.
- Room to Grow: The scalable design lets you stack up to 6 units for massive energy reserves.
- Warranty: Powerwall 3 is covered by a 10-year warranty, same as Powerwall 2.
When can we get it in Australia?
There is no official Australian release date yet, but with U.S. orders firing up, we expect more news soon. Stay tuned to techAU as we keep our ears to the ground for local pricing, release dates, and those all-important Aussie installer partnerships.
