Give me a D!, give me an ARKNESSSSSSS! Yewwwwwww!

The Entertainment Quarter was awash with fans last night with two big gigs in town. If you knew one band was metal and the other pop, you’d think you could tell the fans apart – but last night that was not always the case! The universal appeal of The Darkness saw Dads, Brads and Chads alongside Grans, Susannes and little Dans – all rocking away together, well past bedtime!

Which was the hottest ticket? We love Pink! ‘but we prefer to stay in the darkness…’ and so began the 20th anniversary show of Permission to Land.

Looking back, the band’s 2003 debut studio album set the scene for the return of glam rock and melodic metal. Hailing from a small town in the east of England, exploding into a music world dominated by indy rock – this was just what we needed.

The vocal range of lead singer, Justin Hawkins has to be heard to be believed. And despite the 20+ years singing in what Spinal Tap called ‘The glory and the gutter of rock and roll’, his voice is as good today as it was when ‘Get your hands off my woman’ entered the charts in February 2003.

Taking to the stage in his classic Marc Bolan-esque attire, a red and black catsuit with a modern twist (think Deadpool meets stupid sexy Flanders), the headline show began. Fuelled by a few drinks and high on the charisma emanating from the stage, the crowd sang, danced and bounced with the band through all the hits – all the way to ‘I Believe’ and the encore, played in silk robes and smoking jackets. You can understand why people thought initially they were a parody band because the show is just really good fun! Gyrating hips, headstands and high kicks set the tone, but there is no parody here, it’s an homage to a great time in music, backed up with fabulously crafted lyrics and melodies – all written by the band themselves.

The Darkness were supported by Aussie favourites, You Am I who brought their signature sound to the soundtrack of cult classic mock-Rockumentary ‘This is Spinal Tap’. Kilts, capes and Stonehenge took centre stage on this revival that You Am I first performed back in 2018. Pockets of the Sydney crowd sang along enthusiastically to ‘Sex Farm’, ‘Hell Hole’ and ‘Stonehenge’, delighted by the deadpan sincerity of the band’s mission to ‘Restore the reputation of Spinal Tap! Yeah!’

The Darkness now head to Tasmania for the remainder of their tour. This is the last time we will hear Permission to Land in its entirety… sob!… ‘until the next time’….!!!
