Want to rewrite India’s weightlifting history at the Asian Games: Mirabai Chanu | More sports News – Times of India

NEW DELHI: Though Indian weightlifting has a proud history and legacy, it’s one event India haven’t managed to win a gold medal in at the Asian Games. It’s not a surprise then to hear that Tokyo Olympics silver medallist Mirabai Chanu wants to change that statistic in Hangzhou.

The rescheduled Asian Games will begin in the capital city of China’s Zhejiang Province after a delay of a year on September 23, and Chanu will once again be one of the leading Indian hopes for a medal, but she wants to settle for nothing less than a maiden weightlifting gold for the country.

In fact, Chanu still doesn’t have an Asian Games medal in her cabinet.
“Whenever I sit alone, when I see my results, what I have achieved and what is left, then I talk to myself. I don’t have an Asian Games medal,” said Chanu on the first episode of Timesofindia.com’s new series TOI Locker Room.
Chanu was forced to miss the 2018 Asian Games because of an injury, something which has plagued her decorated career.

Gunning for the World Championships before the Asian Games, the 2017 world champion and two-time Commonwealth Games champion also has another target in mind — touching the 90kg mark in snatch.

She admitted that it frustrates her to not have touched 90kg in snatch, but having recovered from her recent thigh injury after treatment in the US, Chanu says she hopes to tick that box soon.
“At times, I am angry with myself. My aim is 90kg (in snatch), but it hasn’t happened. So I ask myself – why isn’t it happening? Sir (coach Vijay Sharma) also says I have to touch it (90 kg mark in snatch) in this competition, or that one,” Chanu said on TOI Locker Room.

“I do get irritated and feel the pressure of why I am not able to do it. But then I relax and focus on the technique sir has taught. That thought relaxes me when I get back to training,” she added.
Chanu holds the world record for clean & jerk, which she registered at the 2020 Asian Championships with a lift of 119 kg.
Chanu will be competing in the 49kg category for women at the upcoming edition of the Asian Games which will run from September 23 to October 8.
